This
South Mayo lake just north of Lough Mask is one of the most
unusual lakes in Ireland if not Europe. The beautiful green
colour of the water is brought about by the marl bottom
and by the shallowness of its waters. The wooded shores,
the fairy look of its islands and the stunning Partry Mountain
range to the west all create an incredibly beautiful image.
Lough Carra gives a silver coloured variety of brown trout.
As practically all the lake is relatively shallow, trout
can be caught in all parts of it.
Around the shores and on some of its islands are many ruins
of castles and ecclesiastical remains and some crannogs
(man-made islands) as well as Bronze Age causeways.
We hope you enjoy your boating on Lough Carra, whether fishing
or just site seeing.
